PostSubject: Kildare GAA Hall of Infamy   Mon Aug 10, 2015 4:32 am

This might be a contenious topic but i mean it as a bit of banter. I want to hear about the dirtiest teams you ever played against, with or witnessed in kildare football/hurling. Preferably a game from the past rather than a present one.

My submission to the Hall of Infamy is the Under 16 Ballykelly team from about 1997. We played them twice that year. They bet us well in the league in BallyK and we bet them in a shield final in Milltown, well we were leading when they'd had enough of our best player Niall Browne and decided to form a heavy gang mid match and chase him around the pitch bayed on their mothers and fathers on the line who wanted blood. One of our mentors had to come to Niall's aid and throw elbows at the teenagers to fend them off. We were eventually just awarded the game by the ref as resuming it would have been a public health risk.

The sheer level of violence, verbal intimidation and contempt for the ref they brought to games was incredible and i've never witnessed anything like it since.

An example would be when the ref in the league game was giving a throw-in at one stage, A BallyK player got behind the ref and mocked pulling down his shorts. This same gobsh*te of a ref proceeded to give BallyK free reign to terrorise the opposition. He was intimated by them.

Anyway I would like to say that it is nothing personal against Ballykelly and they aren't that bad since but that particular vintage were bad..so any other submissions.

Cheers but not really the question I'm asking as it will just turn into a sh*t-slinging contest if that's the debate..was more asking about particular teams from the past that just went beyond the beyonds of non-observation of the rules on the pitch.

In recent years, I'd have to say Two Mile House. Of course a lot of it was swept under the carpet in true GAA fashion when they had a bit of success.

Suncroft's underage teams about 10-12 years ago were pure scum. They would line up along the wall at the entrance to the dressing rooms and kick and punch until all hell broke loose. Their mentors done nothing about it.

Ellistown were no saints either.

My time was in the 70's & 80's : 2 teams stand out - Ballykelly and Castledermot.

For my part I cited an incident where an underage game was abandoned after a player was chased around a pitch by opposition players who were cheered on by their parents. Not sure anyone but sadists want to see that.

"i mean it as a bit of banter" = direct quote from Caprea, so I'm guessing it's all a laugh and not life-threatening or any grudge or cathartic exercise as recommended by your shrink or anything like that.

One of those we laugh about it now but it was unbelieveable at the time things. I'm not still tramatised but to say the game is gone soft well then you got to ask how much hard stuff do you think is ok?

That struck a chord with me... when I played underage down there (80's) they used to have a lad called Scab (Kelly?) who used to scare the living daylights out of us even if we always hammered them.

Remember a Division Two minor final in Monasterevan and they weren't the cleanest but their parents on the sideline were mental, urging further violence, telling them to "break his legs", losing it with the referee for calling them up on violence, being held back from coming onto the pitch. Was quite nerve-racking at that age. Would love it now mind you, Eric Cantona would be proud.

Caprea, I recall that final but my recollection differs somewhat from your's, in my version your mentor came on to the field and struck one of our young players, an act that generally draws the ire of any crowd. He was then sent off and the game finished normally, but we will have to agree to differ, rose coloured glasses and all that

'tis just a fierce funny thread altogether.... ya have young lads throwin' shapes on the field....on the line, ma's n da's shoutin' n roarin',jayses that would be the norm of most underage Gaa games i've ever attended over the last 40 years !............i wonder are any of the culprits /survivors still kicking ball...? Smile

I think you need a bit of dirt in your team to be fair. Look at the top teams in inter county football. They all have it. You need that edge but make sure not to go overboard.
