As regards a left footed free taker, David Hughes from Celbridge had a decent championship. Wayne Fitzpatrick is the only other underage player from recent years who springs to mind.

David Hughes is definitely worth a look. Wayne Fitzpatrick is way off that level.

He's not a bad free taker. But I haven't seen anything else in this game to get excited about. But you'd know him better Seamus. It's he up to it do you think?

Thanks. Haven't seen Hughes and last I saw of Fitzpatrick was minor level. Seemed to have real potential then.

Certainly needs to work on other aspects of his game. . Being based in Galway isn't helping.

Luke Flynn, Eoin Bateman, Brian Byrne, Mark Hyland and David Slattery called up.

Morgan Flats, Ciaran Fitz and Daryl Flynn decided to take a break / retire.

Hugh McGrillen and Padraig O'Neill "released back to their clubs" - implies retirement.

Sean Hurley needs further surgery which might be in Australia. Doesn't suggest he'll be playing for Kildare any time soon.

Players in IFC and SFC finals to be added after those finals are concluded.

That's it that I've seen - other than Sweeney and Enda Murphy appointments.

Seems Callaghan and Bolton are continuing.

Brian Byrne Bateman(naas) hyland (athy) Luke Flynn (jtb) slattery (Confey) have been called up, mick o Grady Also rejoined.
Being honest I though Davy Hughes would get called up, also would of liked to see some trials, all the above are good players but I think we have other good young lads that would deserve a place on the panel too. Paudie o Neil and mcgrillen have been cut, 2 great servants to Kildare Gaa

Speaking of the full back line, what about the 2 maynooth lads, maguire and mescal. Thought they played well for Kildare u21s last year. Are both out injured at the moment?

Lads. I'm not sure if we've seen the last of Paudi O Neill but what a servant he's been fo the cause for the past 10 years as honest as the day is long. Thank you Paudi for your contribution to kildare football.

I second the Paudie thing, had a brilliant attitude and it's sad to see another good player who gave his all step away without a Leinster medal.

So if I have this right, the squad is something like:
Goalkeepers: Donnellan, McNamara
Backs: P Kelly, B Byrne, O'Grady, Bateman, D Hyland, M Hyland, Lyons, Doyle, Murnaghan, Bolton, J Byrne, Conway, O'Donoghue, Houlihan
Midfielders: L Flynn, P Cribbin, Feely, Hurley, Moolick
Forwards: Dowling, McNally, Tyrrell, O'Flaherty, N Kelly, D Flynn, Slattery, K Cribbin, N Flynn, Smith, Callaghan, Healy

That's just off the top of my head and I'd imagine Sherry will be in after the IFC replay ... who am I forgetting?

To be honest without naming any names there's a fair few lads who I can't see playing championship. Would like to see players such as Mescal and McCormack in fairly lively.

That's 33 players by my count before (say) Sherry and McCormack get added. In the championship you'd likely not use more than 23/24 tops. So yes that's 12/13 that won't see championship action. Personally think squads should be limited to 30 max from league onwards, so as to free up as many as possible for clubs.

Does anyone know the story with Podge Fogarty? Looking more and more as if he's lost to the inter-county game which is a huge shame.

In Championship, you would use 20/21 in one game so with half decent run, you could be pushing high 20s with injuries, player rotation, black card( Mad ) suspensions...

Please tell me this phrase wasn't actually used!

Shame to see Paudie released tbh. He should have been kept hostage a bit longer.

I have to agree, the term ' released back to their clubs ' is inappropriate.

Didn't see anything from PON this year to suggest he should be part of the 2017 panel.

He has been exceptional for the last number of years. How he hasn't got a look in with kildare is incredible.

O'Neill gets criticised for the composition of the management team (including by me), he makes changes and he still gets criticised.

O'Neill gets lauded for how he communicated when we were winning division 3 matches and is now criticised for communicating too much.

O'Neill uses a term "released back to their clubs", used the country over nowadays by county managers, he shouldn't be using it.

Bloody hell

I know players develop at different rates but I wonder when people are championing the cause of certain players whether they have actually watched them at county under 21 level or colleges/university level in recent years when they played. Tends to be a more accurate guide to what a player will do at county senior level than club football and a couple of players mentioned have been found wanting at a higher level already.
