This is almost worse than then under 21's againt Laois in 2013.

Tommy looks about a foot taller and 10 kilo heavier than anyone trying to mark him.

Kicking some nice scores in the wind but a game of FIFA would be as much use as tonight is. Can't remember seeing a team held scoreless at this level but it's heading that way.

All about the scoring difference if we want to get Messi & Co down to our humble abode for semis!

2-14? Slattery and McNally goals.

Scoreboard clock stopped on 30 mins as well, even thats trying to give us a break from the cold.

Still though, if you're the IT Carlow manager at least you can take positives from the wides we're kicking...

Anyone at it? Would have thought that O Neill would have given a few more younger lads a go tonight. He seems to have cut his panel down very quickly. Id be interested to hear how dowling and slattery are doing

For a variety of reasons, there are currently only about 20 available players. There are seven from last year's U21s, shortly to be joined by M Hyland and Darren Maguire. We've had several suggestions on this thread for possible additions but it seems O'Neill wants to work with a pared down squad this year and has fairly fixed ideas.

And well, hopefully he can get us moving. We are going to be short of forward options but this is the way O'Neill wants to go. One observation - inter county football these days is fast becoming a students game. Pitch this evening is like Whelan's of a Saturday night.

Apparently not Bigball - I've suggested several other players on this thread but "they're no better than what's there."

Sure if we can murder the pick of the country's regional technical colleges what is there to worry about?!

Not that it matters, but it's GAA and a Wednesday in January. So draw or better against Offaly we're through; they've to win by 11 points or more to overhaul us; and if we lose, Longford have 30 points to make up in points difference between our deficit in defeat and their surplus in win over Carlow IT. Anyway, we shouldn't be losing, but looks like semi-final barring meltdown.

And because I'm bored...

Group A
UCD 3 (+2)
Wexford 3 (+2)
Dublin 2 (+5)
DCU 0 (-9)

Group B
Kildare 4 (+41)
Offaly 2 (+21)
Longford 2 (+2)
Carlow IT 0 (-64)

Group C
Meath 4 (+30)
Laois 4 (+23)
DIT 0 (-23)
Wicklow 0 (-31)

Group D
Louth 4 (+7)
Carlow 2 (+7)
Westmeath 2 (+6)
Maynooth 0 (-15)

Semi-Finals (Home team first)
Kildare (above scenario) v UCD/Wexford (Whoever beats DCU/Dublin by more - Dublin long shot if they win and UCD don't)
Laois/Meath (winners) v Louth (if they draw/do better against Carlow)

The excitement! Why three-team groups will never work in a World Cup, this is where it's at.

Which players man conceded that point, he needs to buck up his ideas. Letting the rest of the team down.

Why would you bring 50 players in for the o Byrne cup?
Did you ever try and Co ordinate a training session or participate in a session with too large numbers . It's impossible to get anything out of it.
You end up in late Feb not knowing what your best 15 are.
He is right to keep the numbers down . Better sessions , more game time for all .
Last year he tried a heap of lads , most failed , why bring them back down.
You can only beat what's on front of you. Good to see inexperienced forwards score no matter what the opposition but 50 lads. Load of rubbish.
Last year we lost to louth in o Byrne cup and he was criticised. No win with some so called supporters.

A smaller county senior panel can only be good for club football in the county. There were many years where there were plenty of players making up the numbers on the county panel without much hope of ever being involved in the summer and it probably did more harm than good to their long term development due to the lack of football they were getting. At least now they will be able to train and play away regularly without restrictions once the club scene starts up again.

Biggest cheer of the night was for the IT Carlow centreback scoring a minute into the second half - good point to be fair to him.

Hard to take anything from it though, forwards looked lively and kicked some very nice scores - some of the scores seemed to come at the expense of playing a pass in to Slats or McNally as they found space inside regularly.

O'Donoghue adds great pace to the halfback line, we struggled to move from defence to attack last year but if we can fit a few of him, Bolton, Lyons, McNally, Dan Flynn and either of the Cribbins into the middle 8 around Doyle, Moolick and probably Dowling then we'll have some serious pace to work with.

I prefer Hyland at 6 than 3, which is tough because he'll find it hard to displace Doyle from there. He likes to get the head down and bomb forward at times and mark the space in front of his man at times so he's probably less likely to be found out in the halfback line - did a very good covering the fullback line tonight though.

Not exactly a night to try out a free taker, we got one and Flynn missed it. Two 45's in the second half and Tommy Moolick dropped one short while Keith Cribbin took the other one and played it short.

The full forward line looked dangerous all night tonight, not up against much but all confident enough to take their chances at least. Also good to see a few different players stand out in each so far though, Dan Flynn against Roscommon, Dowling on Saturday and Moolick tonight.
