Croke Park thankfully leaving us no wiggle room.

Asked if the CCCC would consider an alternative venue at this stage, should Kildare come back to them, McGill said: “That ship has sailed. If Kildare are not in Croke Park on Saturday the game will be handed to Mayo."

Cian O'Neill I'm told on Six-One news saying it's Newbridge or nowhere. Aside from our performances, he now has played a great part in our football. Credit where due.

McGill's statement is absolutely vintage bullshit... F**k him. Fair play to O'Neill & Kildare county board.

Brilliant - no equivocation whatsoever! 100% behind decision.

Mentioned the fact that the President was at the draw this morning and now they want to change the rules.

Over to you Croke Park!!

Kildare GAA would like to explain the chain of events that has led to the
CCCC announcing Croke Park as the venue for the All-Ireland SFC Round 3
Qualifier between Kildare and Mayo, and to state that the team will not be
in attendance, as the game should be taking place at our county grounds, St
Conleth’s Park.

It was with great delight that we greeted a home fixture in this morning’s
draw, a fantastic reward for the loyal supporters who have travelled to
Owenbeg and Longford for the team’s recent Qualifier successes. It is an
attractive proposition too for team management, players, sponsors, the
business people of Newbridge and surrounding areas, and all of the
stakeholders of Kildare GAA.

As soon as the draw was made, we were in contact with
Newbridge Garda Síochána immediately and they were happy with the
fixture going ahead, their only request being that it throw in at 7pm,
given the influx of people to the area due to the Irish Derby taking place
at Curragh Racecourse at 5.15pm.

Having received the backing of the Gardai, we sent an email to the
CCCC advising them that we would have no difficulty in hosting the fixture
as an all-ticket affair and were already putting plans in place to do so.

We informed the CCCC of the advice surrounding the 7pm throw-in, and
advised them that the Management Committee of Kildare GAA, on behalf of our
loyal supporters, respectfully expected that the CCCC would fix the game
for Saturday, June 30th, at St Conleth’s Park for 7pm and we had no issue with adhering to the criteria for St Conleths Park as previously agreed with the National Facilities/Health & Safety committee

We were asked to provide an alternative venue, an invitation we declined
because Kildare are entitled to the home venue as per the draw, and were in the
position to do so within all criteria of health and safety, and to the
satisfaction of An Garda Síochána.

The Management Committee of Kildare GAA has been in constant contact with
Kildare Senior Football Manager Cian O’Neill. We are all on the same page,
adamant that the game take place in Newbridge as the draw dictates.

When notification arrived that the game was fixed for Croke Park, we
informed the CCC that we would not be fulfilling that fixture, because it
was a home draw for St Conleth’s Park.

This decision does not make sense to us, as we have already hosted
attractive Division 1 fixtures this year.

There is also the concern as to the implications were Kildare to qualify
for the so-called Super 8s series. The major selling point of this format
was that each team would have one major home fixture. Does this now mean
that we in Kildare would be denied that right, were we to qualify?

We are not attempting to do anything that contravenes health and safety
regulations. We can cater for the
fixture St Conleth’s Park and it will not cause undue congestion in Newbridge.

As the management committee of Kildare GAA, we have a responsibility to our
team management, players, supporters, sponsors, businesses and every stakeholder
in Kildare GAA to insist that we be allowed fulfil the home fixture we are
entitled to.

And we are making it clear that we will not play this game in Croke Park.
St Conleth’s Park is perfectly capable of hosting the tie on an all-ticket
basis, Newbridge is perfectly capable of dealing with the number of
supporters that will attend.

This is great. McGill won't budge, too big an ego. And we cannot budge after all that. Walkover me thinks. Wonder will they have guts as result to throw us out of next year as well (think that's rule?!).

Ewan Mc Kenna is 100% correct. The Kildare team should show up at 7pm in Newbridge on Saturday with supporters. But go one further, Also invite Mayo and a referee. If Mayo don't show up throw in ball and unofficial walk over exists. Also time for court injunction even if it only succeeds on delaying the championship on these greedy f€€€€rs

Brilliant statement. A true showing of unity between CB, players, management, supporters and local business.

We are well known as being soft on the pitch but now it's our chance to finally stand our ground and not be pushed around by a bunch of money grabbing leeches.

The turnaround from the level of embarrassment a few weeks ago after the Carlow game to the level of pride if O'Neill and the County Board don't budge on this will be incredible.

Tommy any idea if Kimmage is stuck for a story for Sunday? lol!

Thanks. I sent this:

Fergal, a chara

I have been a member and volunteer my entire adult life.

I read with great disappointment your comments  when interviewed by the Irish Times (published this evening Monday 25 June 2018 on www.irishtimes.com) .

I utterly reject your comment about health and safety. If St Conleth’s Park is suitable to host National Football League Division One games throughout the spring, I cannot understand how it is now suddenly unsafe.

Call a spade a spade. You moved the game to Croke Park in order to sell extra tickets given the limited capacity of St Conleth’s Park. Health and safety has nothing to do with it.

An Treoraí Oifigiúil clearly states in Rule 6.28 that the first drawn team has home advantage from 3 of the qualifiers. I now urge you to withdraw your comments, fix the game for St Conleth’s Park as per the rules of the association, and thereby make some attempt to restore the reputation of the association which you have sadly sullied today and reinforced the mistaken perception of those who seek to denigrate the association by calling it the Grab All Association.

Is mise

My email:
Hi Fergal,
I have been a GAA fan for almost 60 years. If this game does not go ahead in Newbridge I will never attend a game again.
For years I have supported and defended the GAA and all it stands for.
The response by you was arrogant and autocratic.
You should hang your head in shame.

GPA Statement:

25 June 2018

The Gaelic Players Association (GPA) is today calling on the GAA to immediately reinstate the Kildare versus Mayo Round 3 Qualifier game to the original fixture for Saturday evening at 7pm in St Conleth’s Park, Newbridge.

It is unclear why the GAA is not sticking to its original decision* that the first team drawn would have home advantage. The GAA decision to move this game from its original venue of St. Conleth’s Park to Croke Park is unacceptable. Not alone is it unfair to the Kildare team but it is also unfair on the Mayo football panel who are now expected to make alternative travel arrangements having understood that the game was fixed for Newbridge.

Changing the rules with regard to match venues at the 11th hour without any regard to the players affected is not fair or reasonable. Players deserve better and the GAA should respect their own rules in this regard.

*As outlined on the GAA website on Friday 22nd June, “The first team drawn will have home advantage - exception: a Division 3 or 4 team from the current year's Allianz league drawn against a Div 1 or 2 team will have home advantage”

Well done everyone; County Board, team management, players and fans alike. I'm proud of how we've responded to this. We all need to stick together now, regardless of the consequences. Even if we are thrown out it will be for the betterment of Kildare GAA in the long term that we took a stand on this.

Echo the above - borderline shocked at how firm we've stood. But proud of everyone for doing so. This has to be a watershed moment where people refused to accept the deck constantly being stacked in favour of the elite counties.
