County Board Statement - Hurling
Kildare County Board regret to announce that Michael O Riordan and his backroom team have ended their association with Kildare Senior Hurlers.

This decision has not been made lightly but has been forced upon them by a series of breakdowns in communications between the hurling board and the players.

This is a disgracefully inept comment from the county board. No transperency. No wonder there is a breakdown in communications when this is the best they can do when the manager resigns.

Hurling in Kildare is dying a death and but for the efforts of a few hard working hurling men and women and we would have sunk already. The underage (u21 to u16) club scene is a disgrace and no effort is being made to strengthen the grass roots.

No support comes from the county board.

Two points:

1. The guys name is Michael O'Riordan

2. Irrespective of what the County Board's statement says or doesn't say, they are not the sole fault for the failings of hurling in this county.
This county has a Hurling Board, a sub-committee of the county board that is responsible for all maters hurling after Bord Na nOg level, once finance or the need for finance is not involved.
This Hurling Board has, for most, been left to run hurling in this county, largely because any mention of the County Board getting involved in whatever may be happening is met with hostility and objection from the HB and indeed the clubs. Syl Merrins and Padraig Ashe I'm sure will vouch for that, as can those responsible for the Hurling Review programme that put together in order to improve hurling matters in Kildare. They are a law upon themselves and need to be reminded that they are not an equal to the County Board before it is too late.
As I can see, the HB as it stands for the past five years or so have been solely content with a strong Kildare set up from minor to senior and a strong scene at senior club level - everything after that has paled into insignificance with the HB because it takes a lot of effort and isn't as glamorous, hence the reason why the U21 and minor club leagues and championships have gone to the dogs in recent years, although current Secretary Aidan Sinnott does deserve credit for trying to address that since he came into office 16 months ago or so.
I know there are a lot of people who are working their balls off for hurling in this county but in saying that a reality check is needed with most others involved in hurling in this county - the time has come to stop blaming others and get their own house in order!!

That statement was no less uninformative than the county board one after Padraig Ashe resigned

Picked up the local papers to read the full story and to see who has been put in place to take from O'Riordan in whatever capacity and only the Liffey Champion had it - Bertie Sherlock is coach/trainer and Philip Kenny (Celbridge), Willie Sunderland (Moorefield) and Ger Buggle (Ardclough) are the new selectors.
It's a farcical situation with just over a week to go to the Christy Ring Cup! Hopefully something can be salvaged from the wreckage though...if possible!!

Yes, I saw the story in the Champion. Sunderland is the manager, Kenny and Buggle are selectors and Sherlock of course is the trainer. My information is that 30 players attended the two training sessions last weekend in Ardclough. Sherlock is the ace in the pack. This new management was put in place late last week and was ratified at Tuesday night's County Board meeting.
